Hygiene in schools

Schools need to have appropriate toilets and handwashing facilities for students to be able to use them. However, in many instances access does not lead to proper use of these facilities. Students may prefer to defecate in the open, or they may soil the toilet when using it and not clean it afterwards. Dirty toilets pose a serious health risk for their users. The same is true for handwashing facilities: even when they are accessible, they might not be used or not be used properly (performing handwashing without soap, performing it very quickly, only washing one hand, etc.).

We analyze what motivates students to use sanitation facilities properly and to wash hands correctly and develop intervention strategies to increase these behaviors in the school setting.
